You need to move the striker plate back toward the kitchen slightly. The latch is not reaching the entry point on the striker plate.
Another challenge with the door that I didn’t think of earlier is that the insulation strips that are around the door may project too far out preventing the door from closing far enough and the latch from droping into the slot. In which case you’d replace the insulation strips – like you and I started to do in the early fall.
Well, how’s this for solutions: replace the whole door. K and I have been talking about it, and that’s our first priority: replace the three entry doors that are awful and put some new insulation in the attic. More insulation in the walls would be good as well, but that’s a little tricker and more involved — and messier.
