Manic Depressive

Wednesday 4 November 2009 | general

The problem with teaching is that it leads to manic-depressive thinking. When things are up, they’re really up. Confidence soars; it’s easy to get out of bed; grading and planning are a snap. When things are down, it can make one lose confidence in the entire national competency and grind one down into a pessimism that is almost palpable.

  1. Bonjour from Saint-Prest ,a village near Chartres, 50miles South of paris ; I’m a fellow teacher . I teach English ;
    I’ve been a reader of your blog for a few months, I share the same doubts and exaltation about teaching , still !! I’m much older , my children are in their twenties now and i will start blogging in a few years when I retire ;
    keep on , believe in what you bring the students and what they bring to you ; you are a born teacher , as my mother and grandparents used to say (teachers all of them !) or ” once a teacher always a teacher” ; your wife and daughter are close to boost you up when you’re in doubt ; this job has its ups and downs , it is also true that we bring home concerns or joys about students ; the family shares our feelings ; my children knew most of my pupils by name , anecdotes,…. ; they were so supportive and sincere when my daughter had leukemia and they still inquire about her , they or their brothers or sisters ; it is a community not chosen but worth all our labour and care ; give them rewards but also a taste for ambition when they lack self-esteem ; we do a bit of parenting too of course : that aspect has changed over the years , .. another story ….

    best wishes and regards from anne , hi to you lovely three!

  2. Thanks for the visits and comment, Anne. I think the unchosen community observation is a helpful way of looking at things. I strive to create a sense of community in my classroom, but that can be a challenge with 30+ thirteen-year-olds.

    I look forward to the start of your blogging — why not start now?
