WP 2.5 RC2

I’ve been playing with WordPress 2.5 Release Candidate 2.

Matt & Co. have taken it to a new level…

  1. I’m very intrigued by WP 2.5, but don’t have the time to play around with it. If you’ve got time…tell me more!

  2. There’s “Media Library” that consolidates all the uploads — images, videos, etc. — into one, well, library.

The various divisions are more logically organized. There’s only “Write”, “Manage”, “Design” and “Comments” across top. “Options” and “Plugins” are over to the side, smaller. All in all, better use of screen real estate.

One significant negative: several plugins I love (“TinyMCE Advanced” and “Flickr Photo Gallery”) are not compatible), and so I’ll hold off upgrading this site. I always wait anyway — it takes a few weeks for all the plugin bugs to get worked out.

I guess what I like most is just the new look.

  3. I’m really excited about the supposed automatic updates. Hope that’s true because manual updates really do my head in. I only rely on 2 or 3 plugins: akismet (which should work) and bookcover (let’s hope it works) and there’s another one but I can’t remember what it is. But the redesign does sound good!

  4. Does your hosting company not provide Fantastico as a part of the control panel? Through Fantastico you’ve always been able to upgrade automatically.

  5. Sadly, no. I’ve always had to upgrade by hand, which is a pain due to the fact that you can’t just upload a new WP and let it overwrite the old files. Automatic upgrades would be great, especially now when I don’t have as much time as I once used to.

  6. That’s all I’ve ever done when I did it by hand. (I have three different instances of WP running now: one is for this site, which I usually wait to upgrade here because of the plugin issues I mentioned; one is for my school site, which has almost no plugins, so I usually upgrade manually; and a new one, which I haven’t started posting on, but will mention here once I get it the way I like it. I say all that to explain the apparent contradiction with what I said earlier about waiting to upgrade.)

I just did a backup of my database and dumped the new files, except for the wp-content folder. I never had any problem doing it that way. In fact, that’s how I upgraded my school website to 2.5 yesterday, and it’s working fine.

    What problems do you have?

  7. I’ve just always done it according to instructions. It’s one of those things: I ALWAYS follow the instructions on everything to the letter, drives N mad. If they say, delete and don’t overwrite, I delete and I don’t overwrite. I need to switch hosts soon anyhow…what do you use and are you happy with them?

Also, I finally did an upgrade to 2.5 on the weekend. Nice!

  8. I use Jaguar PC (jaguarpc.com). A couple of years ago I was going to switch — they had a lot of “uptime” issues it seemed to me. Before I could switch, though, they worked everything out.

Last I checked, though, the reviews of them are fairly mixed. I’ve been with them for about four years now, and except for the rocky start, it’s been fine, and I plan on staying with them for now.

(If you were, perchance, to switch to them, let me know and I can probably get some kind of prize for referring someone — a new car or something…)

Re: 2.5 — I’ve noticed a few little bugs with it, but I’m hoping that will be worked out with 2.5.1.
