Fun in Fours

New Car, New Savings, New Pictures

Tuesday 30 May 2006 | general

We recently bought a Jetta turbo diesel, with the eventual aim of going bio-diesel. Until we get the filtration system set up, we’re just using regular diesel.

On our trip to the Outer Banks (pics coming soon), we averaged 41.09 MPG, with a high of 47.48 MPG. In other words, to travel 248.8 miles, we consumed 5.24 gallons of gas. At the price we paid (2.89, if memory serves), that’s $0.06 per mile!

Okay — I’m getting nerdy with all the numbers.

We filled up before leaving the Outer Banks and still have a quarter of a tank left…

That’s better efficency than most people are getting out of their hybrids, isn’t it? Those can theoretically get up to 50 MPG, but anecdotal evidence is that hybrids are only doing slightly better than standards.

I’ll have to check in with you in a year or so and see what you think of the Jetta. I’d trade in now, except we only use the car on weekends (and sometimes not even then).

I’m really not sure, to be honest. I know some hybrids claim to get up to 60 MPG, but I’ve also heard that the reality is much lower.

    Hi,
I’m interested in this bio-diesel idea.
What kind of bio-diesel are you going to use in your Jeta?
And as far as filtration system goes are you thinking about converting the engine (something like this) or something for making bio-diesel?
